Keep the first day close to the coast
Sveti Stefan is a manageable first outing from Budva. Use an approximate planning range of 10 km and 20–35 minutes each way before stops, then check live routing from your actual address. Petrovac is another coastal option, roughly 20 km and 30–50 minutes from central Budva. Choose one main stop rather than turning a relaxed afternoon into a checklist.
Give Kotor its own time
For Kotor, allow roughly 25 km and 40–70 minutes each way as an initial planning range. Traffic can make it much longer. Pick a parking area outside the historic centre and explore on foot. Extending towards Perast adds more driving and deserves a fresh route check; avoid promising yourself every bay stop in one afternoon.
Mountains and lakes need a different plan
Lovćen and Lake Skadar are alternatives to another beach day, but the exact route matters more than a straight-line distance. Choose a named viewpoint or lakeside village, check conditions and leave daylight for the return. Durmitor is a longer inland commitment: consider an overnight itinerary instead of treating it as a casual coastal detour.
Make the route fit the rental
Check allowed roads, mileage, insurance and any border plans before setting off. A larger vehicle is not a substitute for careful route choice. Keep water, a charged phone and enough fuel for your plan. All travel times here are approximate planning estimates, not current navigation or guaranteed journey times.
Pick the car after choosing the day
A scenic coastal day with light luggage may suit a convertible, while a group with children needs to check seats and bags first. An SUV can offer a different seating position, but does not change permitted-road conditions. Start with the route, planned walking and parking, then choose the vehicle. For every outing, save the destination and parking location separately so navigation does not send you to a pedestrian entrance.
Keep the return flexible
Set a realistic latest departure time from your main stop, allowing for fuel and the return journey. If the car is due back that day, sightseeing should fit around the agreed handover. Avoid crossing a border as an unplanned shortcut; permission and documents need advance confirmation. Check parking arrangements before busy town visits and carry the rental assistance contact. Reassess the day if traffic or weather changes rather than rushing to preserve the original plan.
