Before you drive
Check the documents required for your licence and the selected rental: identification, driving licence, booking confirmation and any international permit that applies. Age and driving-experience conditions vary by offer. Confirm required documents with the rental contact before travelling rather than relying on a general destination guide.
Give the road your attention
Allow generous time on winding and narrow roads, use seat belts and arrange suitable child restraints. Follow posted limits and current local rules rather than a generic speed table. Familiarise yourself with lights, demisting and controls at handover. In an incident, follow the rental’s reporting instructions and contact emergency services when necessary.
Fuel and refuelling
Confirm the exact fuel type before the first fill: petrol and diesel are not interchangeable. Photograph the gauge at pickup and understand the return fuel policy. Plan fuel stops before longer inland routes, check the pump label and retain receipts. Current fuel prices are not quoted here because they change.
Tunnels, motorway and ferry charges
Montenegro has specific charged infrastructure rather than a conventional nationwide toll network. AMSCG lists the Sozina tunnel, Smokovac–Mateševo motorway section and Kamenari–Lepetane ferry among relevant charges. Check operators for current tariffs, payment and operating information. None of these charges should be assumed included in the rental.
Insurance and border crossings
Read the cover, excess, exclusions and roadside-assistance procedure. If you plan to leave Montenegro, obtain the required permission and confirm documents and insurance for every country on your route before booking. A route displayed by a map does not itself mean your rental agreement permits it.
Prepare the car as well as the route
Before leaving the handover point, locate the lights, hazard switch, demisting controls and the assistance information. Ask the rental contact to explain unfamiliar controls rather than testing them in traffic. For an automatic car, confirm how the selected model should be used on descents. A larger vehicle still needs a route that suits its dimensions and the allowed roads in the agreement.
What to check again before a longer trip
Review the latest road information and your destination’s access before setting out. Carry your booking contact and the documents required for the journey. If a planned road is closed or conditions change, choose another suitable route rather than assuming an unpaved alternative is permitted. Our trip guide helps you keep the day realistic; the collection checklist covers the rental details to clarify before driving away.
